The Castelli Romani towns have long been the retreat of choice for the well heeled of Rome, escaping the summer heat in the Eternal City. Even the Pope's summer residence is in the area, in Castel Gandolfo (8 km from Rocca di Papa).
On Sundays throughout July and August the Pope traditionally gives a midday address from the balcony of the Papal Palace.
The road from Rocca di Papa to Castel Gandolfo skirts the beautiful Lake Albano. The still waters of the volcanic crater lake are ideal for water sports, there is also a 'beach' area and a smart promenade with restaurants, bars and ice cream palours.
The beautiful town of Frascati, the heart of the Castelli Romani wine producing region is 6 km from Rocca di Papa. The vines on the Colli Albani hills thrive in the rich volcanic soil.
The fertile volcanic ground and the climate have also originated great chestnut tree woods which now form part of the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani.
The Castelli Romani Natural Park is made up of 9,500 hectares of protected territory with the aim of safeguarding the integrity of the natural and cultural features of the fifteen Castelli Romani towns situated within the ancient Vulcano Laziale, the Colli Albani hills.
